Attendance at "Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy Surgical Skills Training Course", Munich
In September Dr Osborne was one of five Australian surgeons invited to attend this course. The focus was on advanced techniques for treating both Rotator Cuff tears and instability pathologies.
Darren Glendenning (B.App.Sc (Physiotherapy), M. Sports Phty, APA Sports Physiotherapist) has started seeing Dr Osborne's patients in preparation for their surgery. Darren is a very experienced physiotherapist who has a particular interest in shoulder and knee injuries including pre and post-operative rehabilitation.
Dr Don Osborne completed his Medical Degree at the University of Adelaide in 1993. He moved to Newcastle the following year and it was here, that he completed both his basic surgical training and orthopaedic training.
After finishing his orthopaedic training he spent time in Italy and Australia doing fellowships.
Dr Osborne returned to the region in 2004 and commenced practice in both the private and public hospital systems. He specialises in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder.
Dr Osborne continues his education by attending conferences and workshops as both a participant and facilitator, domestically and internationally, to further his knowledge and skills, ensuring patients receive up to date and clinically proven treatment.
He maintains membership of international and Australian professional bodies.
His commitment to ongoing education actively involves the teaching of medical professionals, junior doctors, medical students and physiotherapy students through the University of Newcastle. He supervises orthopaedic trainees for the Australian Orthopaedic Association and assists them in preparation for their final exams, both as a mentor and trial examiner.
In addition to this he offers a fellowship, which is a one year period of further training provided to a fully qualified surgeon who wishes to further sub specialise. The most recent fellows being Dr Y Michla from the UK, Dr B East from Australia, Dr Alan Cooney from the UK and Dr Roger Leo from Indonesia. Dr Sondre Hassellund from Norway has just completed this position with Dr Osborne.
